Respectfully disagree with you. 🙂
I enjoyed it a lot more than I did 2wei! The first half of this season is slice of life and build up for what is to come, but it doesn’t feel nearly as invasive and distracting. In addition, there is an introspective focus on Miyu and her origins/background being hinted at which couldn’t have come at a better time now that she and Kuro have been integrated into Illya’s circle of friends and family and Kuro’s character arc has mostly ended. Overall it just has a better balance.
Now I do agree that one’s enjoyment of this season does come with being able to stand the first five episodes being entire slice of life/filler as well as liking Illya’s Muggle friends enough to begin with, but I for one LOVED the beach, Mimi’s awakening and SABER RION RAND. Festival episode was good too but better toward the end.
At the very least, the quest to retrieve the eighth Class Card and the final battle was fantastic in its presentation and emotional payoff. It is intense, it is beautifully animated, it is exciting and it sets up for 3rei and brings Miyu’s character arc to a close flawlessly IMO.
And just seeing Illya BEFRIEND Gil…..mmmmmph yes, there really isn’t much else I can ask for. That was so awesome and refreshing.
I was just happy to see Miyu finally get the spotlight, really. Kuro made Illya come to terms with her feelings for Miyu, OT3 confirmed.
But I’m sure we can all agree where the series will really start shining is in 3rei!! We’re already a few weeks in and its so goddamn awesome.
As I mentioned that one time, just because I said I would stop covering this season did not mean I dropped it. This is Magical Girl Illya 2 1/2.
